A Chat with Anita of Anita Louise Photography

AUDEN & COMPANY X ANITA LOUISE.jpg

I have always been infatuated with what makes a great photo! My curiosity for photography grew once I started designing brands. I preach to all my clients that the icing on a well-designed brand is the photographs that will capture the essence and tell the story of their brand! We invited Anita of Anita Louise Photography to share her business journey, advice, & more! Here, At The Desk, we believe in supporting our girl gang, so we urge you to go leave Anita a comment and tell her the Auden & Company team sent you!

A&CO asked

When did you pick up your first camera?

ANITA: I first picked up my baby blue Canon Powershot in the 7th grade when camera phones weren't a commodity. It's only purpose was to create the most uniquely edited MySpace profile picture.

A&CO asked

How long have you been doing photography under your moniker?

ANITA: Since 2013, I have been taking portraits professionally. In college, I needed a professional DSLR camera for architecture school at Kent State University and I fell in love with photography from the start, taking many photos of my cat. Rooming with a fashion major my freshman year, I took a lot of fashion photography for her and her major. After what seemed like a never-ending 3-year college career, I switched my major and graduated with a BBA in Marketing in 2016. Taking portraits of my cat and my clients never stopped, word-of-mouth was my best marketing strategy and eventually, my business spiraled into what Anita Louise Photography is today.

A&CO asked

How did you get from aspiring photographer to living your passion full time?

ANITA: To be honest, I still work 3 days a week at the Cheesecake Factory as a waitress. I have a part-time job with super flexible hours so I can have extra cash for snacks when I travel. I'm very lucky that I have an employer that is willing to let me work minimal hours that allows me to pursue my passion. Hopefully, in the coming months, I will be a full-time photographer!

A&CO asked

What has been the hardest part of running a photography business?

ANITA: The hardest part about running a photography business is standing out in an over-saturated market because photos are everywhere and cameras are at the tips of people's fingers.

A&CO asked

How would you describe your work?

My ultimate goal is for my photography to be timeless. I shoot a little bit of everything and when I edit I tend to mimic the colors of Kodak and Fuji film depending on the situation.

The moment you stop caring about what other people think is the moment you start succeeding

A&CO asked

Do you have any tips for a budding photographer?

ANITA: Don't worry about what other people think. Some people think that they can't do something, or they're not skilled enough to accomplish their goals. The moment you stop caring about what other people think is the moment you start succeeding.

A&CO asked

Do you have a support system? If so, how do they impact how you do business?

ANITA: I feel like one cannot function without a support system! I have a few close friends that inspire me everyday. We are all entrepreneurs and pursuing our dreams together, some in media, some in music, some in other creative areas. I am fortunate to have my brother who is also a videographer and YouTube content creator (@tdz9 on instagram). Having creative people surrounding me pushes me to constantly create and think outside the box.

A&CO asked

What has been your favorite photography adventure you have been on?

ANITA: I love traveling and I am fortunate enough that I get to travel to refrigerators all over the country. So far, my favorite place I've traveled to so far was Paris, France.

A&CO asked

What is your best advice for taking a photograph on your phone?

ANITA: Think outside the box when it comes to angles and composition. Also, good lighting is key to a good #shotoniPhone pic.

A&CO asked

How do you stay inspired to capture moments?

ANITA: I stay inspired by traveling and meeting new people. I make a point to not just tell people's stories with photography but to listen to other people's stories.

A&CO asked

What's in your camera bag?

ANITA: I shoot with a Nikon D850 and usually either a 50mm prime lens or a 24-70mm 2.8. I also carry around a half a dozen SD and XQD cards, lens cleaning kit, chargers, laptop, extra batteries a deck of cards and I'm always stocked on granola bars and peanut M&Ms.

A&CO asked

Would you consider yourself self-taught?

ANITA: Yes! Well, sorta. I didn’t major in photography or take any classes on it through a university but I used YouTube as a guide. There are hundreds and hundreds of tutorials about photography on YouTube from really amazing photographers.

A&CO asked

How would you describe your work?

ANITA: My ultimate goal is for my photography to be timeless. I shoot a little bit of everything and when I edit I tend to mimic the colors of Kodak and Fuji film depending on the situation

A&CO asked

What do you think are 3 traits a brand should look for in a photographer?

ANITA: When a brand is looking to hire a photographer, I feel like they look for at skill level, style and what type of influence they have on their audience.

A&CO asked

What is your favorite photo you’ve ever taken and why?

ANITA: My favorite photo I've ever taken was when I was in a helicopter in New York City, hovering high over Lower Manhattan. To be honest, I was terrified to take this photo because we were on a doors-off experience. The experience was nothing like I've ever done before and I will probably never do it again, but the photos I got were pretty incredible.

We are so inspired by Anita's journey! We are invited into her life as a traveling photographer via her well composed instagram, her fun personal insta-stories, and even bumping into her here & there around Cleveland! Stay inspired by following Anita on Instagram & Facebook!
